Kundan vs Polki – Know the Difference

They look alike, but they are not the same. Learn how Kundan and Polki differ in stones, craft and value.

Kundan and Polki are both Mughal-era crafts beloved by Indian brides. While they look similar, the difference lies in what is set inside the gold.

What is Polki?

Polki uses uncut, natural diamonds in their raw form. Each stone is unique, which is why Polki pieces carry a higher value and are often passed down as heirlooms.

What is Kundan?

Kundan refers to the technique of setting glass or gemstones in highly refined gold foil. It offers the same regal look at a more accessible price point.

How to Tell Them Apart

  • Polki stones have a natural, slightly uneven sparkle; Kundan stones look glassier.
  • Polki is certified as diamond jewellery; ask for the diamond certificate.
  • Both often feature meenakari enamel on the reverse — a mark of fine craftsmanship.

“Choose Polki for an heirloom, Kundan for a statement — and wear both with pride.”
