22K vs 18K Gold – Which is Better for You?
Understand the key differences between 22K and 18K gold, including purity, durability, price and best use cases.

Walk into any jewellery store and the first question you will hear is about karats. 22K and 18K are the two purities most Indian families choose between, and each has a clear place in your jewellery box. Here is how they compare.
What the Numbers Mean
Karat measures how much of the metal is pure gold. 22K gold is 91.6% pure (hallmarked 916), while 18K gold is 75% pure (hallmarked 750). The rest is a blend of copper, silver or zinc that gives the metal strength and colour.
Colour and Look
22K has the rich, warm yellow that is synonymous with traditional Indian jewellery. 18K is slightly paler and can be alloyed into white or rose tones, which suits modern and diamond-set designs.
Durability
Because it is softer, 22K is ideal for necklaces, bangles and heirloom sets that are worn on occasions. 18K is harder and holds stones more securely, making it the better choice for rings, studs and pieces you wear every day.
- Choose 22K for bridal sets, temple jewellery, coins and long-term value.
- Choose 18K for diamond jewellery, daily-wear rings and contemporary designs.
- Always check for the BIS hallmark, purity grade and HUID code before you buy.
“Purity tells you the value; the design tells you how often you will wear it. The best choice balances both.”
